Relationships can be hard work. There are going to be times when you and your partner have disagreements, rough patches, and fights, and that is normal. However, there can be situations where this goes too far, and one of the partners may be controlling the other, making them feel unworthy, or devaluing their feelings. This can lead to a relationship becoming toxic. A toxic relationship in general terms is any relationship where the couple does not support each other, where there is a competition between the two, where there are conflicts between the two and one tries to undermine the other, and ultimately where there is disrespect. Some signs of a toxic relationship include:

  • Lack of trust
  • Lack of communication
  • Continuous disrespect
  • Mutual Avoidance
  • Insufficient Support
  • Ceaseless control issues
  • Feelings of unworthiness
  • Shortage of Autonomy
  • And more

When you are in a relationship for so long, these warning signs may seem normal to you, because you are so used to it. It is important to recognize when these are going on and get the help you need because nobody deserves to feel like they are worthless and unloved. Sometimes these relationships are able to be worked through by getting to the root of the problem and building coping skills to help. Other times the answer might be to walk away. When it comes down to it, it is important to take care of our mental health and safety, and love should never cost your life.
