Dialectical Behavior Therapy

Dialectical behavioral therapy is a cognitive-behavioral treatment developed by Marsha Linehan, Ph.D. DBT is targeted to help people decrease conflict in their lives, manage negative emotions, and build emotional strength. DBT is an evidenced-based practice and has been used successfully to treat people experiencing depression, eating disorders, bipolar disorder, post-traumatic-stress disorder, and substance abuse. This 24- week group is broken down into four modules: Mindfulness, Interpersonal effectiveness, emotional regulation, and distress tolerance skills. DBT skills are thought to have the capability of helping those who wish to improve their ability to regulate emotions, tolerate distress, learn mindfulness, being present in the given moment, and communicate and interact effectively with others. The goal of the group is to learn and practice skills alongside others. Members of the group are encouraged to share their experiences and provide mutual support.
